Tuesday, March 2nd- NO SCHOOL FOR STUDENTS

Digital Citizenship
Throughout the year, I have talked with the students about being respectful and responsible citizens. It's also important for students to be respectful and responsible digital citizens! I know that this type of learning environment can be very difficult at times and hard to concentrate and focus. However, it's very important that students are trying their very best to stay on task and work hard. Students should not have any other tabs, games or websites open while in class. I have spoken to the class about this many times. It would be much appreciated if you could also have this discussion with your child. I can often tell when students are looking at the screen but most likely not at the google meet screen or when I call their name multiple times before they answer, which tells me they might doing something else on the computer at that time. Again, having a conversation with your child about how this is not acceptable would be very helpful.

Quiet Workspace
It's also important for students to have a quiet workspace while in class. I know the circumstances can make this difficult at times, especially when there are multiple people at home. However, if tv's and other conversations around the student can be kept minimal at the time your child is in class, that would be very helpful to your child. It's difficult for students to concentrate when there are a lot background distractions. Thank you so much for your help and understanding!

Random Acts of Kindness Month
February is Random Acts of Kindness Month! The counselors have created a fun calendar with an act of kindness for every day. Students are challenged to fill our community with kindness and complete the activity for each day. Those who complete at least 20 acts of kindness can fill out the Google Form and be recognized as Kindness Superstars on the morning news in March.

Basic Addition and Subtraction Timed Drills
We did our first timed drill today in Math! Everyone did great. It takes some time getting used to it! I always tell my students that it's okay to not finish all 50 problems, we just look for improvement each week! These are not graded. They will just be used for practice this year. It's very important that students become fluent with their basic addition and subtraction facts.

I have added a button to my Schoology page that will contain all the Science and Social Studies study guides for each unit that we will cover. If your child needs some extra guidance and review on a subject we covered in class please use the study guides!

Mid-Year MAP Testing
MAP testing went very well this week with only a few glitches! Due to the snow day this past Tuesday, we will complete our last day of testing next Wednesday, February 10th. Therefore, if your child is not testing it will be an asynchronous day after Morning Meeting and Read Aloud. Thank you for your patience and understanding with this! Wednesday we will be back to our normal schedule!

Basic Addition and Subtraction Timed Drills
We will be starting timed math drills in February. Students will be given 5 minutes to complete as many addition and subtraction problems as they can. There are a total of 50 problems on the paper. Please keep in mind, we do not expect students to reach this goal of completing 50 problems until the end of 2nd grade. This is a standard we will be working towards. As the year progresses, students become more fluent with their basic facts and more comfortable with the idea that they are being timed and their scores improve so please do not worry if your child is not completing them. These timed drills are half sheets of paper found in their blue folder that was given to them at the supply pick-up. Students should not be completing these on their own.
