The second grade phonics kits just arrived today. They should be delivered to the room Tuesday or Wednesday. I am looking for a couple parents who would like to come in Thursday and/or Friday to do some laminating, cutting, and organizing. Fall PTA Fundraiser: Puma Pomenade Walk-a-Thon/Fun Run (Puma Olympics)
Focus Areas for the Coming Week:· Reading: The students will learn strategies to solve tricky words when reading.
· Writing: We will continue our Writer’s Workshop. Students will begin crafting powerful small moments.
· Math: We continue Unit 2 in math. This unit will cover number sense up to 1,000.
· Social Studies: We will continue our unit on Communities. Students will identify differences between past and present communities. The will also describe contributions to communities, diversity, individual rights, and voting.

REFLEX MATH - Students need to complete 60 minutes of Reflex Math each week. Students who complete their Reflex Math for the week will be able to participate in FUN FRIDAY! Students who do not complete their Reflex Math will need to work on addition/subtraction facts for half of their Fun Friday. The next time Reflex Math will be checked is on Friday, October 4th. Any Reflex Math students do over the weekend will count towards the Friday, check.

The Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) is a standardized reading test used to determine a student's instructional level in reading. The DRA is administered individually to students by teachers. Students read a selection (or selections) and then make predictions, retell verbally or complete a written summary. Depending on the level, some students will need to describe their favorite part, the most important part, and/or the author's message.
The Phonological Awareness Literacy Screening (PALS) is a proactive and preventive screening measure that assists teachers in providing differentiated, targeted instruction to meet your child's needs.

1st Quarter Interim Progress Reports ("interims") will be issued Wednesday, October 2nd. If your child receives an interim, it will be emailed to you on Wednesday, October 2nd using the email address on file in your ParentVue account. Our Puma Olympics will be held next Thursday, October 3rd. Students will spend time outside participating in a variety of team-building and cooperative games. Please be sure your child comes to school dressed in comfortable clothes and athletic shoes / sneakers.

2019 Fall Fundraiser: The Puma Promenade
When: In school during the Puma Olympics 2nd Grade 8:30am-10:15am
Who: All students will participate with their class whether they register to raise money or not.
Where: Pinebrook Track
How: Students will raise money to walk or run laps around a 1/16 mile track from 15 minutes. Each student will have a website where family and friends can pledge the amount of their choice for the student to walk/run the track.
This Walk-a-thon / Fun Run will be held on October 3rd (grades K-2) and October 4th (grades 3-5) during the school day. It will be one of the events in the Pinebrook Olympics put on by the PE Department. This is a healthy and fun fundraising alternative that promotes physical activity and teamwork, all while supporting our school! Students will have the opportunity to help earn money for their school while having fun with their friends.

Unit 1 Math Assessment - The first Math Test will be on Wednesday, September 18th. Unit 1 focused on Number Sense. Students need to know odd and even numbers and be able to explain why they are odd or even. They need to know ordinal position, skip counting forward and backward, and growing and extending patterns. There will not be a study guide sent home for math. Please use the homework assignments to review the concepts covered.
Science Experiments
The students really enjoyed practicing the scientific method with our two science experiments this week. We did a Leak Proof Bag Experiment and also a Walking Water Experiment. Take a look at the pictures below.
