DRA Reading Assessment:
Your child may be given the Mid-Year DRA test sometime in January if he/she did not reach the mid-year benchmark at the start of the year.  The mid-year benchmark in second grade is DRA 20.  On the next report card you will see whether your child is performing below grade level, at grade level, or above grade level.

Operation P.A.W.S

This year, Pinebrook has decided to dedicate our holiday drive to all children fighting illness. Pinebrook has students current and past who have been hospitalized due to a wide variety of illness or injury. It is with empathetic hearts we think about the children spending their holiday in the hospital.

Pinebrook will be sponsoring a toy drive for children hospitals to be able to supply their patients with joyous gifts this holiday season. Unfortunately, no illness stays away for special occasions or holidays, so the gifts collected will bring a much needed winter smile to the faces of many young patients.

What: Purchase something from the list (on the back) and have your child bring it to school with them. Collection boxes will be placed throughout the school When: December 5th -16th
Where: Pinebrook Elementary Why: To Provide A Winter Smile (P.A.W.S) Thank you very much for helping Pinebrook bring winter smiles to young patients in our area.

The Lifetouch Photographer will be here Tuesday for school picture make-ups.  Retake pictures are only for those students who were absent on picture day or who purchased a picture packet on picture day and would like their pictures retaken.  If you purchased a picture packet on picture day and would like your child's school picture retaken, please send me an email for more details.

Hour of Code

Hour of Code is back and will be during the week of December 5th. Your child will be completing the Hour of Code at school during Computer Lab time on Wednesday and then 30 minutes on Thursday. They are also able to continue working on it at home, if they would like to.
If your child would like to complete the Hour of Code at home, the link is https://hourofcode.com/us/learn
If you would like more information about the Hour of Code, please visit the website.
What is Hour of Code?

The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. Check out the tutorials and activities. This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide.

We will also need boxes of plain graham crackers. Graham crackers will need to be sent in by Tuesday, December 13th so I can start putting the gingerbread houses together.
Students can bring in frosting and candy treats anytime between now and Friday, December 16th. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Native American Project

Native American Project
Due Date:  Thursday, November 10th

Second Grade is starting a Native American Unit in Social Studies.  In class we will be learning about the Powhatan Indians, the Pueblo Indians, and the Lakota Indians.  The students will learn about where the tribes were located in the United States, the food that they eat, the homes they built, the clothing worn, and the transportation used.

Today the students were given a project to be completed at home and will have 3 weeks to complete it.  Students need to pick a Native American tribe, research that tribe, complete the booklet on the tribe, make a three-dimensional representation of the tribe, and then present it to the class

Students were given a packet today with a list of Native American tribes to choose from.  You may choose a tribe not on the list.  The three tribes we ask that you not select are the Powhatan, Pueblo, or Lakota because we will cover these tribes extensively in class.

Projects and booklets will be on display at the Second Grade Native American Performance on November 15th.

Bring Your Own Technology

We will be starting BYOT (Bring Your Own Technology) in our class on Tuesday, October 11th! A Pinebrook Elementary School Student Contract was sent home with students today. Please read this with your child to make sure he/she understands the guidelines. This form needs to be returned for them to be allowed to participate in BYOT.

Students in this classroom will primarily be using their devices during center time so please make sure Raz-Kids is easily accessible to them on their device. Ear buds must be worn for this program due to the read aloud aspect of Raz-Kids.

At times, students will be allowed to use Reflex Math during math time as well. Please also have this program on their device.

Teachers are not allowed to touch devices. If your child is having a difficult time using the device, they will be asked to take it home and ask their parents for assistance.

Consequences for not using device properly: Pinebrook Policy
1st Violation- 2 week suspension from using device in school
2nd Violation- 1 month suspension from using device in school
3rd Violation- Suspended use for the remainder of the school year

If you would like more information on BYOT please go to the Pinebrook website. There is a BYOT link on the left hand side. Go to the Parent Information tab and open up the Parent Information PowerPoint.
Please let me know if you have any questions!

Word Study Test

This Friday, the students will have their first word study quiz.  Please practice spelling the words and placing them in the correct feature.  In order to receive a 4 on the Word Study Test, the students must spell the word correctly, put the word in the correct feature category, and then come up with a word (not in the word study words) that could also be in the same feature category.

I will be contacting parents, who singed up to volunteer in the classroom, to assist me in giving the word study tests every other Friday.  I will also be contacting volunteers to come in the classroom every other Monday to help introduce word study words.

Making Connections

This week the focus of read aloud is on making connections. In class we talked about the four types of connections:
1. Self to Text - a connection between the book and your life experiences
2. Text to Text - a connection between the book and another book/text you have read
3. Text to World - a connection between the book and events in the real world
4. Text to Media - a connection between the book and something you've seen on TV or computer
Students need to make a connection with a story and explain how it reminds them of one of the connections.  The connections quiz will be this Friday.

School Pictures

Important Information About School Pictures:
Fall pictures will be taken Friday, September 30th.  This will be a day for individual pictures only; a whole-class picture will be taken in the Spring.  Following are some guidelines to help facilitate your picture order / purchase:
If possible, please order your child's pictures online.  It's the fastest, easiest, and most convenient way to order your child's pictures.  If you order online, you do not need to send anything to school with your child on Picture Day!
If you are not ordering online, please fill out the payment envelope, enclose your payment, and send it to school on picture day.  Your payment envelope must include your child's name, my name, your "look" (or background) selection, and your payment.

Read Aloud

Read Aloud
Every day I do a Read Aloud with the students.  During Read Aloud, I work with the students on many different skills and concepts.  Some things that are worked on include making predictions, relating information to prior knowledge, making connections, emphasizing story elements, guiding students with questioning, and working on summaries.

This week the focus is on making predictions about what happens in a story.  Students need to be able to make a prediction and support their prediction. "I think ______________ because _____________."

Every Friday, the students will be given a quiz to assess their understanding of the Read Aloud topic. This Friday, the students will be given a quiz on predictions.  I will read a story, stop half way through and students will be expected to write "I think ______________ because _____________." We have and will be discussing this all week at school, so students should be very familiar with this line.  You can also use this line at home with your child to help reinforce the concept.

Word Study

Word Study is an alternative to traditional spelling instruction. It is based on learning word patterns rather than just memorizing words.

Today is the official start of Word Study.  Each student was placed in a word study group based on his or her spelling needs.  A copy of the word study words should be in your son or daughter's homework folder today and another copy will stay at school.  Students will work with the words for two weeks. The first word study assessment will be on Friday, September 30th.

Each day during Reader's Workshop, students will complete one word work activity.  Here are a list of activities the students will do each day.

Week 1
Monday: Introduce Words and Sentences
Tuesday: Pictures
Wednesday: Rainbow Write
Thursday: Dictionary
Friday: ABC Order

Week 2
Monday:  Spelling Stairs
Tuesday:  Write Words 3 Times
Wednesday: Vowel Hunt

Math Class Update

After Back to School Night, I created a letter which will be sent home to all second graders about math placement.  On the letter you will see who your child's math teacher is. All math classes will now have students write their math homework in their agenda at the start of math class.  If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me or your child's math teacher.
