DRA Reading Assessment:
Your child may be given the Mid-Year DRA test sometime in January if he/she did not reach the mid-year benchmark at the start of the year. The mid-year benchmark in second grade is DRA 20. On the next report card you will see whether your child is performing below grade level, at grade level, or above grade level.
Reflex Math
Please make sure your son or daughter is completing Reflex Math every week. 60 minutes is due every Friday. Reflex Math helps students of all ability levels to develop fluency with their basic facts in addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Once students reach 100% fluent, they no longer need to complete the 60 minutes each week.
Thank you for your continued support!
Best of luck to all of you in the New Year!

Operation P.A.W.S
Operation P.A.W.S
This year, Pinebrook has decided to dedicate our holiday drive to all children fighting illness. Pinebrook has students current and past who have been hospitalized due to a wide variety of illness or injury. It is with empathetic hearts we think about the children spending their holiday in the hospital.

Make Up Pictures December 6th
The Lifetouch Photographer will be here Tuesday for school picture make-ups. Retake pictures are only for those students who were absent on picture day or who purchased a picture packet on picture day and would like their pictures retaken. If you purchased a picture packet on picture day and would like your child's school picture retaken, please send me an email for more details.
Hour of Code
Hour of Code is back and will be during the week of December 5th. Your child will be completing the Hour of Code at school during Computer Lab time on Wednesday and then 30 minutes on Thursday. They are also able to continue working on it at home, if they would like to.
If your child would like to complete the Hour of Code at home, the link is https://hourofcode.com/us/learn
If you would like more information about the Hour of Code, please visit the website.
What is Hour of Code?
The Hour of Code started as a one-hour introduction to computer science, designed to demystify "code", to show that anybody can learn the basics, and to broaden participation in the field of computer science. It has since become a worldwide effort to celebrate computer science, starting with 1-hour coding activities but expanding to all sorts of community efforts. Check out the tutorials and activities. This grassroots campaign is supported by over 400 partners and 200,000 educators worldwide.
Gingerbread Houses
Our class will be making individual gingerbread houses on Tuesday, December 20th from 10:00-11:30. I am looking for parents to come in and help out with this activity. If you are interested in coming in to help out with this fun event, please return the bottom portion of this page.
Each student needs to bring in one can of vanilla frosting and at least one unopened candy treat (no peanuts) to share and put on the gingerbread houses. The more items sent in, the better the gingerbread houses will look! Some candy treats might include: Gumdrops, M&M’s plain, Peppermints, Skittles, Hershey Kisses, Pretzels, Cereals, Mini Candy Canes, and Licorice bites.
We will also need boxes of plain graham crackers. Graham crackers will need to be sent in by Tuesday, December 13th so I can start putting the gingerbread houses together.
Students can bring in frosting and candy treats anytime between now and Friday, December 16th. Please contact me if you have any questions or concerns.

Native American Project
Native American Project
Due Date: Thursday, November 10th
Second Grade is starting a Native American Unit in Social Studies. In class we will be learning about the Powhatan Indians, the Pueblo Indians, and the Lakota Indians. The students will learn about where the tribes were located in the United States, the food that they eat, the homes they built, the clothing worn, and the transportation used.
Today the students were given a project to be completed at home and will have 3 weeks to complete it. Students need to pick a Native American tribe, research that tribe, complete the booklet on the tribe, make a three-dimensional representation of the tribe, and then present it to the class
Students were given a packet today with a list of Native American tribes to choose from. You may choose a tribe not on the list. The three tribes we ask that you not select are the Powhatan, Pueblo, or Lakota because we will cover these tribes extensively in class.
Projects and booklets will be on display at the Second Grade Native American Performance on November 15th.

In order to receive a 4 on the Word Study Test, the students must spell the word correctly, put the word in the correct feature category, and then come up with a word (not in the word study words) that could also be in the same feature category.

3. Text to World - a connection between the book and events in the real world
4. Text to Media - a connection between the book and something you've seen on TV or computer
Students need to make a connection with a story and explain how it reminds them of one of the connections. The connections quiz will be this Friday.

Read Aloud
Read Aloud
Every day I do a Read Aloud with the students. During Read Aloud, I work with the students on many different skills and concepts. Some things that are worked on include making predictions, relating information to prior knowledge, making connections, emphasizing story elements, guiding students with questioning, and working on summaries.
This week the focus is on making predictions about what happens in a story. Students need to be able to make a prediction and support their prediction. "I think ______________ because _____________."
Every Friday, the students will be given a quiz to assess their understanding of the Read Aloud topic. This Friday, the students will be given a quiz on predictions. I will read a story, stop half way through and students will be expected to write "I think ______________ because _____________." We have and will be discussing this all week at school, so students should be very familiar with this line. You can also use this line at home with your child to help reinforce the concept.
